Private Gregory Sher, Deployment to Timor
After undertaking lead-up training in the Northern Territory from mid-to-late 2002, Greg’s regular infantry unit 5/6 RVR attached to 5/7 RAR for deployment to East Timor in support of Operation Citadel from November 2002 until May 2003.
Operation Citadel saw Australian forces help to ensure the stability of the fledgling East Timorese state. The tasks assigned to Greg’s infantry battalion included border security, urban patrols, interdiction missions and diplomatic/embassy protection. Operating within his team, Greg usually patrolled as one of the section’s forward scouts. He carried the Steyr rifle with GLA attachment.
